Brushed Finish Pull

Can over cleaning a gun barrel cause crown damage or "brushed out" before the barrel is "shot out?"?

I heard that over cleaning the barrel can actually wear it out before the barrel gets shot out. I was just wondering if there was any truth to this. When I clean my rifle (.223) I am very careful, yes I make numerous passes but not hundreds or anything. I use a quality Hoppes brush for a .223 and a ball bearing Tetra one piece rod. I finish up with an oiled bore snake after a thorough cleaning. This is an OCD question but I want to be sure. I also know to start from the chamber side and push the rod all the way through and out, never to pull it back half way through.

It is true that more damage is done while cleaning guns than while shooting them.

These are the things to be careful of:

Always use a rod that is made of aluminum or brass. Never use any sort of steel cleaning rod.

The brushes are the same way; use brass or bronze cleaning brushes only. Never use stainless steel or steel wool.

Use only prescribed gun cleaning fluids such as Hoppes. Don't try to cut corners like some folks and use brake cleaner or some other substitute.

Be mindful of how you are running the cleaning rod into the barrel. Especially make sure it is aligned straight and not an an angle...or you may wear away either the chamber neck area or the crown of the barrel. While it is true that brass and aluminum is softer than steel, repeated wearing on the survaces can cause damage. Just as a brass or aluminum hammer head could place a dent in steel...so can the repeated "honing" of a steel barrel with a brass or aluminum cleaning rod that is not properly aligned with the bore.

EDIT: I really like "Arne K"s advice here. He sounds like a lot of benchrest shooters that I have encountered over the years. And those guys spend a heck of a lot of money on their rifles, optics, loading setup AND cleaning equipment.

I might be considered a bit of a hillbilly myself, but when I get ready to go big game hunting (bear or deer), I usually take my rifle to the range about 2 to 3 weeks before the season to test fire it and make sure it is hitting where I aim it. I do this in the fall, right before the season, because the temperature and humidity conditions are closest to what will be encountered during the hunting season (temps usually around 35 F and low humidity). I feel this is important particularly when shooting a wood stocked rifle. If I hit within 1 inch of the bullseye on my first shot, then I simply stop shooing and put my rifle away. I see no value in shooting 3 shot or 5 shot groups, when the very first shot did what I was expecting. I also do NOT clean my rifle barrel for the remainder of the season. I usually refer to this as a "wet barrel"; that is, one that has fouling and some powder residue leftover from the test firing. At the very end of the season I use a brass cleaning rod to run a patch of Hoppe's No. 9 through the bore (from the chamber end), then follow with 2 or 3 dry patches. Then run a few swipes with an patch with a light gun oil like Ballistol. At this point, my rifle goes in the gun safe until the next season.
